These are a few of the sounds you'll encounter in the spring
turkey woods.
Hen Yelp - The yelp is a basic turkey sound. It is often delivered in a series of single note vocalizations
and can have different meanings depending on how the hen uses it.
Cluck - The cluck consists of one or more short notes. It's generally used by one bird to get the attention of another.
It's a good call to reasure an approaching gobbler that a hen is waiting for him.
Cackle - The
cackle is usually made when the turkey is either jumping down from her nightly perch or crossing creeks, fencelines and
other obstacles.
Hen Cut - The cut is a very excited call from the hen. It can be heard at a great distance and is often used by a single
turkey looking for companionship.
Gobble - The gobble is a sound we're almost all familiar with. It's a call made by the male wild turkey and is given to
let the hen's know that he's in the vicinity. It's a good locator call as other Tom's will gobble back at it. IT
CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS though as other turkey hunters will sometimes move in on your location thinking it's the real
deal. Use this call on private lands and with extreme caution!
Crow - The crow call is a great locator call. Tom turkeys will gobble at it to show their dominance in the spring woods.
It is often better as a locator call over any other, cause the turkeys won't advance after hearing it and you'll have time
to get set up for that last few feet of enticement.
